When we are afraid, anxious, overly excited, our brain goes to its primitive state, (amygdala - flight, flight or freeze). Through the practice of mindfulness we learn in these moments to access the part of the brain that allows emotional regulation (prefrontal cortex) which give space for "thoughtful response," as opposed to impulsive reaction.

Wish Fulfilling Jewel
"Within your own mind, you already have what you need to succeed, the ability to put others ahead of yourself. This is called virtue, the wish-fulfilling jewel." - Buddha
(This is a Lamrim practice of "wishing love" realizing that giving joy to others brings the deepest kind of joy to self. A peaceful happy mind benefits ourself and all others in our lives. The best gift we can give. In the practice we imagine we are taking in the beauty of things around us to fill our heart with radiant joy in the form of light and then radiate this joy outward to others.)
*With children there are many fun imaginative ways to do this. Using nature especially! :-)
Rainbows also symbolize impermanent nature of all things. Especially the"self" we often feel stuck with when painful minds arise. This self is an intangible, mere appearance - just like a rainbow

Fortunate Ones
This is a mindfulness practice of gratitude and being in the present moment. Also, the very first key meditation in the Lamrim series called, “Precious Human Life.” Neuroscience has now validated that the mindfulness practice of gratitude brings emotional well being and happiness; and the mindfulness practice of being present in the moment brings better concentration and focus to all we do.

Beginningless Time
Neuroscience is validating that the mindfulness practice of sharing brings deeper joy. This is also based on the buddhist teaching of self-cherishing. The mind that believes our happiness is more important than others' happiness. There is a teaching of a blind turtle lost in the sea who's only chance to see the surface and be free is to find a golden yoke (lasso) floating in this sea (highly improbable). This is analogous to how rare and fortunate it is for us to have this precious human life now to cultivate minds of love, compassion, forgiveness and patient acceptance.
